Imanee saw AWOL at a Youth Summit and was impressed with the positive unity she saw within the organization. She approached the Director of the play and wanted to join the play Choices: A Romeo and Juliet Story, even though the show had already been cast. Seeing the longing in her eyes, the play’s Director, Lakesha Green decided that she had no choice but to let her come in for a private audition. Recently, Imanee’s mother came to rehearsal and complained that Imanee was not completing her chores at home, like cleaning the kitchen. AWOL’s Executive Director, DaVena Jordan spoke with Imanee about it and told her that respect for her mother and their home was very important. The very next week when Ms. Jordan pulled up to practice, Imanee ran up to the car to report that she had completed all her chores at home and thanked her for the pep talk. She has found a great outlet with AWOL and has grown in her poetry and also improved her attitude due to the influence and discipline that she receives daily from AWOL.
