The Bacon Family

Karen (mom), Angelhene, Mikalah, Kah’teah – Fondly referred to as the “Bacon Sisters,” each of these beautiful young ladies entered AWOL programs in 2006 and are now considered AWOL Veterans. With the oldest sister Kah’teah being just as shy and introverted as the two younger girls, Angelhene and Mikalah, during their first year of programming it was hard to tell if they even enjoyed coming to AWOL. Growing up in a single-parent home, life can be rough in a house with four female children, including a baby sister, Farrhen (no shown in photo). Sometimes it was hard to get back and forth to AWOL rehearsal, but their mother, Karen, made a long-term commitment to keep her girls safe from harm while she worked during the evening hours. A decision that would, in the long run, benefit the girls a great deal. Each of the girls chose to enter the Dance aspect of AWOL through a partnering group, Abeni Cultural Arts. Before long, each of them would blossom into amazing dancers with the oldest performing in productions such as the 2008 Shakespeare Festival and a host of other community productions. Not to mention the girls’ grades have steadily improved along with their school attendance rates and most importantly their confidence is now through the roof! Don’t believe us? Come see them perform in this year’s annual theater production, Choices: A Romeo & Juliet Story.
